What are the main things to carry in a vehicle in case of emergency?

Going on a long trip by car, just looking for some suggestions - I'm trying to whittle it down instead of taking everything but the kitchen sink! :)What are the main things to carry in a vehicle in case of emergency?
I would say the main thing to have is money! A couple of credit cards! If I was you I would definitely have your vehicle checked out before leaving to start with. And taking food and drinks is always a good idea.- As far as break downs, taking jumper cables, carrying a gallon of water in case of a hose letting go,and i always carry a tire repair kit with a little compressor. AND DON'T FORGET A FLASHLIGHT!And as you said emergency, also take along a First aid kit. A few tools might not hurt also. I really don't think taking things like this is to much. When you are broke down along the road this kind of stuff is priceless. And your cell phone of course! Hope this helps. GUESS YOU CAN ALWAYS STRAP YOUR LUGGAGE TO THE BUMPER! Have fun. What are the main things to carry in a vehicle in case of emergency?
I would carry: gallon of water, flash light (make sure batteries are good), blanket, non perishable food (crackers...)

jumper cables, tools, electrical tape or duct tape, sweater or jacket (depends on climate)try to always have a cell phone with a good charge or car charger.
If your traveling to cold climate pack some warm clothes.Make sure your spare tire is good and you have everything needed to change it.Check your belt or belts for wear.Good pair of walking shoes just in case.Flashlight, you'd be suprised what you can fix with a sharp knife, duct tape, bungee.
I usually stick to the essentials, a phone, a gun, and money.
