Do astronauts carry guns with them, in case there's an alien attack?

I'm seriously asking. Shouldn't they be prepared?Do astronauts carry guns with them, in case there's an alien attack?
That's classified information.

In any event they would never tell us.

But I do believe they carry some light sabers.Do astronauts carry guns with them, in case there's an alien attack?
The risk from alien attack is negligible, so it's not reasonable to carry weapons for this purpose.

The survival pack on board the Russian Soyuz spacecraft contains a handgun. It is supposed to be used to fend off wild animal attacks if the capsule lands off course, somewhere in the wilderness.

Here's an article by James Oberg about this:

Umm...... i don't think so. This is reality, not star wars, the possibility of there being life on a planet that is in OUR solar system i would guess would be one in a billion (unless your talking about mars or the moon since they both have liquid water). Even if there was aliens i don't think they would be smart or strong enough to kill a fully-growned astronaut, c'mon.
I know that Buck Rogers always carried one. His trusted ray gun at his side. You never know when a mad scientist will capture you in space.
umm prepared for what exactly? The only thing a gun would do in space is kill everyone on board the spacecraft two reasons.

1. As mentioned before shooting a bullet in a spaceship would most likely damage the spacecraft, and shooting a hole in a spacecraft would possibly lead to explosive decompression killing everyone on board.

2. The atmosphere on board is enriched oxygen or an oxygen helium mix, both very combustible, so there is a chance the flash of a gunshot would ignite the oxygen/helium in the atmosphere and kill everyone inside.

3. Finally, if an alien attacks a spacecraft they're not doing it from inside they'll just destroy the spacecraft from the outside sheesh.
I suppose not. They're not expecting an alien attack any day.But I guess the real answer is top secret.
The Apollo 11 moon landing didn't need any weapons against aliens they had Buzz Aldrin, he was 100% effective against aliens and pretty deadly against Bart Sibrel (see link). Obey the fist of Buzz Aldrin!. Still there was no reason for the astronauts to carry weapons given that if a gun went off in a spacecraft it would very much be pretty fatal to the astronauts, though they did carry cyanide capsules in case of an emergency. The Russians however did carry guns as part of a survival kit in case the capsule went off course and landed where there are dangerous animals. During flights, the gun is packed into a metal canister located between two couches on the Soyuz spacecraft and is only used in case of a failed landing situation, then it is given as a present to the commander of the Soyuz capsule. The whole story started in 1965, when a Soyuz spacecraft landed in a remote area of Russian territory and apparently the crew had encountered hungry wolves, or bears, even though the rescue helicopter team stated that, in fact, the wolves were about 3 kilometers away the landing site, nowhere near the capsule.

In contrast, the U.S. space agency NASA, had never carried firearms into space, but machetes were provided just in case a capsule were to land in a jungle area, and even though rescue missions can localize a stranded space capsule in the matter of a few minutes, the firearms still remain on board Soyuz spacecrafts. Training usually takes place on the Black Sea, when the crew learn how to exit the spacecraft while it is floating on water.
NO.
No.
Shooting a gun on a spaceship would be even more dangerous than shooting a gun on an airliner.

First risk is of missing your target and having the bullet ricochet around inside a tin can. You can wind up being hit by your own bullet.

Second risk is of putting a hole in your spacecraft. Because the pressure outside is lower (in fact, nearly 0), all the atmosphere inside the spacecraft will exit the spacecraft and you'll die from lack of oxygen.
Well!!!

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station apparently have access to a gun.

Russian Cosmonauts carry a gun on their Soyuz space capsule, which is attached to the space station. Salyut 3 had a machine gun. The station had a 23 mm rapid-fire cannon mounted on the outside, along the long axis of the station ';for defence against US space-based inspectors/interceptors

But, they are not carrying them to defend from aliens....

An astronaut would only carry a pistol in case a fellow astronaut went nuts. The same reason I carried a pistol as the Captain did. You do not want to hear about the fight that erupted.
You watched too much sci-fi, I assume. Well, I think not, but it's top secret information.
For aliens to visit us they would be so advanced that a gun wouldn't help you.
Probably not.
i know the russian astronauts carried guns but that was in case they landed in hostile territory here on earth. think, if a civilization were advanced enough to build starships, what effect would puny earth pop guns do?
typical launch costs are around $10,000 per pound.

taking an unauthorized weapon onto a government vessel of ANY type is prohibited.

so it would not be permitted and would be FOOLISHLY expensive.
A typical fire-arm would be useless in space. A bullet requires combustion, which requires oxygen, which there is none in space. If we carried weapons out there, they wouldn't be good for any more than a rock would. But if you are out in the middle of nowhere, I guess a rock would be hard to find anyways....
what would astronauts do even if they have guns with them. It is believed that alien's technologies are far ahead of that of our technologies. Just keeping guns wouldn't help astronauts to counter-attack. Alien's might use lasers to attach astronauts if they at all want to attack human or human's machines... one more thing is that it would be very risky for astronauts to carry guns in space..!!!!
You have the wrong mental image of astronauts. Think of them as high-tech plumbers. Not as high-tech cowboys.
